Equity Board Presence & Collab Practices
Presence during pitch Meetings
Hey, y’all!
Last semester the Equity Board had a stronger presence during pitch meetings for the community side of Annenberg Media, and this semester we’d like to change that! You’ll be seeing us jump from one meeting to another to be sure to take part in the pitching processes for community, TV, and radio. We hope that by doing this we can share insights that’ll last through the rest of the semester and in meetings where we may not be present.
Best Collaboration Practices
One particular thing I’d like to note for this week is collaboration. But what does it look like? Collaboration can be seen when desks join forces to cover a story. The biggest example would be the 2020 elections when the politics desk and TV collaborated to provide updates on election results through video and text.

When covering a story where there may be overlap, it’s okay to reach out to another desk to see if they have any leads or are already covering it. However, it’s not best practice to reach out to only ask for a source.
It takes away the opportunity to gain experience in reporting and connecting with the USC and South L.A. community. It’s better to make these connections as a reporter because it’ll help in your own practice in the long run. And of course, reach out to community members and organizations with thoughtful language.
Best,
Steven Vargas
