Understanding BIPOC & Stress Resources
What is BIPOC?
As we begin to use the term BIPOC more in our reporting, I wanted to flesh out what this means and why it’s important. BIPOC, as many of us have embraced at this point, refers to Black, Indigenous, and people of color. It is different from POC in that it highlights Black and Indigenous experiences with white supremacy. Each group experiences racial injustice differently, so the term ensures that those reading it understands the broadness of the community represented in it. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be used to refer to a single community. If we are reporting on Latin communities or the Black community, we can refer to them directly instead of using BIPOC as an umbrella term. This is how the term can be misused.

Stress resources for students
As journalists and college students, we’re conditioned to be operating at 100% at all times. It’s okay to step away from the slack and go for a walk or spend some time on TikTok to destress. If you witness someone experiencing a mental health crisis, here is a mental health first aid action plan to help tend to the person and provide appropriate care.
